Imagine every lemonade stand on your street secretly tells the same calculator how much it charges. The calculator then tells all of them what to charge tomorrow. Nobody ever meets in a back room, but somehow the price keeps going up on every corner. That's what renters said happened to their apartments, and landlords just agreed to pay $359.9 million to settle it.
Here's why that's a big deal: "the software told us the price" sounded like nobody was to blame. This settlement says the people using the software still answer for what it does with their private information. The landlords didn't admit anything, and the software company wasn't part of this deal. But if you rented an apartment between 2018 and 2025, there may be money with your name on it, and the deadline is January 29, 2027.
